Joining forces as Almost Falling, KaterBlau resident Esther Silex and Kotelett channel a good many-sided energies on their exciting first single, ‘Trace Your Steps’, first extract taken from their forthcoming debut album to be released on 14th Juli, 2023. Ethereal and transporting, their heavily pop-influenced sound is a perfect encapsulation of our time, of which it fuses that sense of gravity-defying abstraction and up-to-date nostalgia. Very much connected to its era and environment (the material was recorded in their home studio of Holzmarkt during the pandemic), ‘Trace Your Steps’ offers a suspended moment in time, not quite picking a side between the thought-provoking nature of spoken word and the urge to exorcise its demons through a good old boogie session.

Draped in layers of melancholic synths and a kaleidoscope of slo-unfolding, origami-like envelopes, ‘Mountains of Madness’ blends in a minimalistic tang of pop sensuality with that of low-slung, pensive electronics to exquisite effect. The rolling cascades of spaced-out keyboards and Esther’s smooth timbre make for a superb musical encounter, brushing a fascinating picture of today’s universal issue of coping with a world that goes too fast and finding your place in it. Shifting the angle onto trap motif’d programming, which it injects with a healthy dose of LA beat music vibrations and hypermodern voodoo, ‘Trace Your Steps’ highlights Almost Falling’s unique approach and vibrant mix of society-questioning lines and straight out fire rhythms built for the dance floor but not strictly limited to it. Or how dance music can transcend its mere “entertaining” characteristics to establish a lasting and stimulating vision.
